We are not related to CPP; even if there is no more so called Communist Party in China, KMT would have not lasted. The facts that Chang’s core group members were mostly educated in the west might seem like an advantage. But it also meant that they were woefully disconnected from common people. To make it worse, Chang put all of his family members and friends in critical government positions where they accumulated MASSIVE wealth from the already poor country. ROC might be a republic in name at the time, but was very much running like a dynasty. Economy was bad. Hyperinflation was happening. Even if there was no CCP, some other movements would have eventually started from common people. There was no way ROC/KMT would have lasted, at least not in the way it was going. So what could have happened? Best case scenario: After winning WWII, the country settled down with a competent government, may it be an improved ROC without Chang or a new government. It would pretty much followed the same trail-and-error steps like CCP did in attempting different reforms, but hopefully with fewer missteps like great leap or culture revolution. China would end up how it is like today, but perhaps further ahead in economy, better in culture retention and a bit more religious/political freedom because better education level. People would also have greater sense of social and economic stability. Although the censorship and some other policies that west is scream about today might still get implemented. Likely scenario: China ends up like India or South Africa in term of economic development. Different factions in government get stuck in deadlock, so do the growth of the country. Worst case scenario: General population fell for the “democracy solves all problem” crap and adapted whatever system west says is best for the country. Election would soon be hijacked with a foreign power secretly bankrolling/supporting one of the puppet party. The country would be opened up to the west and the economy immediately dominated with no domestic competition. China would become a colony under capitalism. There would be no hope to advance because the country had already submitted under “international” rules made by west. People would become dissatisfied because they were staying poor or getting poorer. But the foreign controlled media would never blame the “democratic” system or the west. Fingers would be pointed at different social/economic/culture/minority groups. The political landscape would soon become like Taiwan today except MUCH worse. If this version of China has miraculously made it to 2020 without breaking apart, it would be at the verge of another huge civil war. Conclusion? CCP is far far away from perfect but also not the worst thing that could have happened to China.
