We got an inside look at how the United States Army trains tankers and cavalry scouts during its 22-week One Station Unit Training. Chief video correspondent Graham Flanagan went inside the Armor School in Fort Benning, Georgia, where he observed soldiers at various stages of training. After completing 10 weeks of basic combat training, soldiers go through 12 more weeks of advanced instruction. Future tankers learn how to drive, fire, and maintain the M1 Abrams battle tank, which has been the Army's primary tank since the Gulf War. Soldiers also learn how to load the tank's ammunition rounds, which range in weight from about 30 to 60 pounds. Along with tankers, the Armor School trains cavalry scouts, whose mission is to perform reconnaissance and gather intelligence in the field and report to leadership, who may decide to utilize armored weapons and vehicles based on the scouts' reports. Cavalry scouts also train with anti-armor weapons like grenade launchers and rocket launchers. Chief video correspondent Graham Flanagan spent five days inside Recruit Training Command Great Lakes, where he observed different companies at various stages of training at the facility located about 35 miles north of Chicago. Recruits must pass a physical assessment and a swim qualification before they train in seamanship, firefighting, and weapons training. They're also exposed to tear gas inside a confidence chamber where they learn to correctly wear gas masks. Training culminates with “Battle Stations” an all-night event that takes place on a mock Navy destroyer ship designed by companies who have created theme park attractions for Walt Disney World. After completing the event, recruits officially become sailors when they receive their US Navy ball caps. In season two of "Boot Camp," senior video correspondent Graham Flanagan went inside the basic training programs of military branches and law-enforcement agencies to see what it takes to join the ranks of those who protect and serve their country. Before the COVID-19 pandemic, he visited the academy where future Canadian Mounties are trained. And he visited Fort Benning, where future US Army soldiers experience their One Station Unit Training. In the spring of 2020, the coronavirus pandemic sparked changes in training programs at the US Army, the Marine Corps, the US Coast Guard, and the US Coast Guard Academy, among others. The COVID-19 crisis is changing the way future Army soldiers are trained at the Fort Benning military base near Columbus, Ga. As of March 29, six confirmed cases of COVID-19 have been connected to Fort Benning. According to the Army, the patients were not part of training operations. Due to the crisis, some aspects of training that involve physical contact have been suspended, and physical distancing is being applied to exercises that will continue to occur. New medical screenings have been incorporated into the reception of the hundreds of soldiers that arrive every week to begin their training. All visitors are prohibited from attending graduation ceremonies, and recent graduates are being held at Fort Benning for the immediate future instead of being shipped to their new units. We got an inside look at the United States Secret Service's intense, six-month basic training program. Senior video correspondent Graham Flanagan spent three days inside the James J. Rowley Training Center in Laurel, Maryland, where he observed recruits at various stages of training. According to the Secret Service, about one in every 100 applicants makes it through the agency's intense vetting process to become a recruit. The base salary for new agents and officers is $47,000 per year. After spending three months at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center in either Artesia, New Mexico or Glynco, Georgia, recruits return to Laurel for three more months of Secret Service-specific training. Although we were allowed to film inside the academy, much of the training remained secret. According to the training center's deputy chief, Michael Buck, this was intended to avoid "giving people specifics into our protective methodologies ... we don't advertise our playbook." UPDATE: In the video, we identify a car as a Dodge Challenger, when what is seen on screen is a Dodge Charger. We regret the error. What TSA Airport Dogs Go Through In Explosives Training | Boot Camp

The Transportation Security Administration — or TSA — employs more than 1,000 explosives detection canine teams at any given time. But before they’re deployed to one of the many mass-transit sites across the United States, they must graduate from the TSA National Explosives Detection Canine Program. Insider spent a day with the program at the TSA Canine Training Center, located at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas, to see how the TSA trains both dogs and handlers. The dogs receive 24 to 32 weeks of training and work in a variety of environments, including mock aircraft and airport terminals. Trainers use classical conditioning to teach the dogs to search for odors from explosive materials. After six to eight weeks of training, the dogs are paired with a handler, whom they’ll finish the course and graduate with. Roughly 90% of all canine teams graduate from the course. The COVID-19 crisis is changing the way future United States Marines are trained at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot in Parris Island, SC. According to anonymous defense officials who spoke to the Washington Post, between 20 to 50 positive cases have been confirmed at the Depot. According to a Recruit Depot spokesperson, some of the cases were discovered in the recruit population. Beginning March 30, the Recruit Depot suspended the shipping of new recruits to Parris Island. When shipping resumes, new recruits will be held in a 14-day "staging" period before they begin processing ahead of training. These recruits will be medically screened multiple times per day. Due to the crisis, physical distancing measures are being implemented in dining facilities and "squad bays" where recruits sleep However, training will continue for recruits already in Parris Island, with physical distancing measures being implemented at the discretion of the drill instructors. Although graduations will continue to occur, visitors are prohibited from attending. Upon graduation, new Marines will continue to ship out to the training that occurs on other bases after they leave Parris Island. With a price tag of about $84 million, the V-22 Osprey is the world’s first production tilt-rotor aircraft. The MV-22 Osprey, flown by the Marine Corps, has the ability to take off vertically like a helicopter and then convert into airplane mode and fly up to 300 mph like a traditional turboprop plane. In combat, the Osprey is capable of inserting up to 24 soldiers into remote areas without a runway or air-traffic-control towers. Insider visited Marine Corps Air Station New River in North Carolina to see what it takes to fly and operate these aircraft. Before they become snipers, all students must graduate from the US Army Sniper Course, a seven-week program that teaches soldiers from the Army and National Guard essential skills in fieldcraft and marksmanship. Insider spent two days at the US Army Sniper Course inside the Fort Benning military installation near Columbus, Georgia, where we observed various classes at different stages of training. Just 288 students are accepted into the Sniper Course each year, and roughly half pass the course and graduate. Students learn to operate several weapons systems and must master hitting targets up to 1,100 meters away. Prospective snipers learn how to create ghillie suits, a type of camouflage clothing that snipers use to blend in with their environment. They are educated in a wide array of fieldcraft skills, including target detection, range estimation, and stalks, where they must stealthily move through wooded terrain without being spotted by instructors. Those who are able to graduate from the course could be deployed into combat as snipers immediately if necessary. We got an inside look at the "Village" mission, one of the final tests of the United States Air Force's 7.5-week basic military training program at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas. Trainees have three minutes to locate and "rescue" a mannequin representing an injured airman from inside a hostile village. Instructors acting as opposing forces, both hostile and nonthreatening, as well as the simulated sounds of IED explosions and gunfire create an intimidating environment. Trainees must utilize their prior Expeditionary Skills and Tactical Combat Casualty Care training, and are evaluated on their ability to demonstrate sound judgment and self-control when dealing with opposing forces. Most of the world’s açaí comes from the Amazon rainforest. People risk their lives to harvest the fruit, climbing palm trees that can grow taller than 50 feet. And while açaí has become one of the trendiest superfoods in recent decades, small farmers aren’t seeing a lot of the profits. The açaí industry has also taken heat over reports of child labor. We went to Brazil to find out how the world’s açaí gets from the Amazon to smoothie shops around the world. Here's an inside look at the United States Army's intense 22-week basic training known as OSUT, which stands for One Station Unit Training. Senior Video Correspondent Graham Flanagan spent four days at the Army's Maneuver Center of Excellence located inside the Fort Benning military installation near Columbus, Georgia, where he observed different companies at various stages of training. After a processing period that takes one to two weeks, recruits experience what's known as a "shark attack," when drill sergeants create a high-stress environment through a series of rapid-fire instructions and commands. Once the intensity subsides and training begins, the dynamic between the drill sergeants and the recruits evolves into one found between a teacher and students in a classroom. Despite rainy conditions that rarely let up during filming, we saw various dynamic aspects of training, such as marksmanship, tear gas exposure, and MOUT, which stands for military operations in urban terrain. In the video, we incorrectly refer to duffle bags as rucksacks. Insider regrets the error. Students at the US Army Sniper Course at Fort Benning participate in stalk mission exercises to prepare for real-world missions. They must stealthily navigate through wooded terrain without being spotted by instructors walking around them and scanning with binoculars from afar. After covering their ghillie suits with natural vegetation to blend in with their environment, students have two hours to reach their objective, but they can be penalized by instructors if they’re caught moving improperly or if they’re not adequately camouflaged. Students at the Sniper Course participate in four practical stalk exercises before moving on to graded events, of which they’ll have three opportunities to pass, or they'll be dropped from the course. In October, Insider followed a class participating in their first practical stalk exercise.
