But don’t let that overwhelm you from really digging in and finding out how you can really help these students flourish to become fluent readers! You’ve got this!!! Reading Strategies | How to teach the Tryin' Lion Strategy

29.03.2020

Teaching reading strategies to your early readers is essential for reading success. Teaching the Tryin' Lion reading strategy right after teaching the Eagle Eye, Lips the Fish Strategy, Stretchy Snake Strategy, Chunky Monkey, Flippy Dolphin, and Skippy Frog is the best way to start getting your students to begin using and APPLYING the different reading strategies as they read. The Tryin' Lion reading strategy is an essential tool to help teach your young readers to think more critically about the story they are reading. When they come to an unknown word, they try a word that would make sense in the sentence, read to the end of the sentence and then go back to see if they can figure out the word using the context clues from the sentence and the other strategies now that they understand what the sentence is about.. Early Readers are reading on levels D through I, and they’re learning sight words and high-frequency words. They’re also beginning to tackle two-syllable and even some three-syllable words. They’ve learned many of the predictable spelling patterns, and they’re beginning to learn to solve words with regular letter-sound relationships. So introducing the Tryin' Lion strategy to help readers not get STUCK on unknown words and use a word that makes sense in the sentence, is an excellent way for them to start thinking about the context of the story to solve unknown words. Early readers know enough about words to be able to use Tryin' Lion as an effective word-solving strategy when needed using the context of the sentence. Using this reading strategy will assist your students with word retrieval, vocabulary development, and understanding that as the words become increasingly more difficult as their reading progresses, using a strategy like Tryin' Lion will help them use context clues to help with their comprehension of the text. Teaching reading strategies to your early readers is essential for reading success. Teaching the Lips the Fish reading strategy right after teaching the Eagle Eye Strategy is the best way to start getting your students to begin using the different reading strategies as they read. The Lips the Fish reading strategy is an essential tool to help teach your young readers to focus on the beginning sound of the word they are trying to decode. Using this reading strategy will assist your students with word retreival, vocabulary development, and understanding that letters make sounds, sounds make words, and words make sentences. These Guided Reading activities are ready to engage and excite your young learners. I want to make sure that my guided reading activities will keep my readers excited about writing after they read. Teaching 2nd graders for 23 years I have learned that our students NEED to have guided reading activities and lessons that aren’t the same thing over and over and over again… This is EXACTLY why I have created ALL of the resources I have. During my Guided Reading groups, my students never knew what I was going to pull out for them to do on any given day. And because of that they were EXCITED for my guided reading activities! In today's video I am going to share with you a few activities that I did with my small groups during Guided Reading. Download your FREEBIE here: 🤍 Questions? Leave them below! This is an easy and effective way to teach Cause and Effect. In this video, I will demonstrate how I teach Cause and Effect during a guided reading lesson. I help my students understand how to create Cause and Effect relationships by thinking about simple events that happened in the story they read. I teach them how to use the words SO and BECAUSE to create the cause and effect relationships and how to read the statement two ways to ensure the sentence makes sense.
